Vision

Back due to popular demand, and with brand new dates this summer!

 

This intensive aims to introduce participants to the basic pillars of playwriting: structure, character and dialogue. It aims to give participants the opportunity to explore and share their own ideas and writing style while being mentored in a safe and experimental space. Through practical tasks, participants will be able to hone their individual ideas while also fostering their unique vision as a way to find their own voice.  By the end of this course you will:  

 

  • Understand the fundamental concepts of playwriting  

  • Learn how to develop characters  

  • Develop skills required for writing dialogue  

  • Apply techniques to analyse text and drive your message

Age: 18+

The Playwriting Intensive

This Intensive is not currently running.

This intensive is designed for those with an interest of being introduced to concepts, methods and tips behind the directing process of text-based theatre. This masterclass will focus on the pre-rehearsal preparation to directing. By the end of this course you will be able to: 

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a leader

  • Identify how to work better with actors

  • Develop a vision for your theatre piece

  • Use techniques to analyse text and drive your message

  • Apply the basic principles of getting a scene on its feet

Meet The Tutors

Simone Spiteri - Playwriting 

Simone Spiteri trained for her Diploma in Acting at the Malta Drama Centre and obtained her B.A. (Hons.) and M.A. in Theatre Studies from the University of Malta.  

 

She set up her own theatre company, Dù, in 2004 in which she performs, directs and writes.Her written and directed work has been performed in Denmark, Egypt, Sicily, Spain and Macedonia, National Francis Ebejer contest for playwriting and is a published author with Merlin Publishers.  
 

She is currently the Head of Acting of Studio 18 and a freelance writer and theatre-maker. 

Jean-Marc Cafa' - Directing

Jean-Marc Cafa` has directed and performed in various plays and musicals locally and overseas. He is currently the Creative Director of Studio 18 Malta, while also working as a consultant and freelance director. Jean-Marc graduated as an actor from the Guildford School of Acting in 2010, prior to interning and shadowing as a director in the UK. He also holds an MEd in Teaching and Learning for the Arts from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, with a focus educational leadership for adult learning in the arts.

 

In 2011, he managed the implementation of ZiguZajg, Malta’s first international arts festival for children and youth. Between 2011 and 2013, Jean served as the Artistic Director for SOPA (School of Performing Arts by Drama Troupe) and oversaw the youth programmes run by Spazju Kreattiv. He also served as Vice President and Rep for Education for APAP from 2012 to 2014. He moved on to found Studio 18 in 2013, which he has served as creative director since.
